Hyperlocal Headlines

In June, Sydney based artist collective Make or Break will travel to Naarm/Melbourne to present their work Hyperlocal Headlines in partnership with Next Wave. The collective’s practice involves a combination of installation, text and community workshops. The project is an accumulation of more than three years of research by the artists into the role of media bias and how it intersects with the power of what is made visible in news culture, and wider media correspondence and reportage. The project asks: How does language influence our world view, or reveal our biases?

Will the future of news be hyperlocal or distributed?

Who writes it, how is it accessed, and who controls it?

Hyperlocal Headlines takes place as a series of artist-facilitated creative conversations and collective storytelling and writing sessions that imagine a different, hyperlocal future for news. Participants will become citizen journalists for a day, learning to collaborate with AI technologies, understand media bias and language, and explore how the ways we tell stories can impact collective futures. Participants’ narrative and poetic speculations will be broadcast as website interventions and on three public digital news tickers across Naarm/Melbourne.

On display until 26 June 2022. Level 1 Balcony, rear QV Square
