“I find myself when I find my community. My blackness becomes understood, my voice is heard and I feel a sense of belonging. The black diasporas in Naarm/Melbourne share a wealth of experience surrounding their black identities and cultures. Centered in the home of friends and strangers, I aim to work collaboratively to explore the rituals of hair care and storytelling between community members. Our hair is versatile and transformative and the act of hair care creates a space for intimate conversations, building relationships and knowledge sharing. Co-created with community members, I use photography and sound to explore our diverse identities in these intimate spaces to create a project that is a co-authored archipelago of belonging.” Jade Jones, Artist
