Julia Rachel Rapke

Julia Rapke became a special magistrate for the Children’s Court in 1927. She was founding president (1938-40) of the Women Justices’ Association of Victoria. Involvement with the National Council of Women of Victoria led to her becoming convenor (1931) of its standing committee for suffrage and rights of citizenship. She was involved in research on a range of matters including ‘Women and Household Employment’, ‘Economic Aspects of Women’s Rights and Equalities’ and ‘Legal Domicile of Married Women’, and also wrote profiles of eighteen significant Australian women of the time. From 1940 she served as vice-president of the Council for Women in War Work and as a member of the Coordinating Committee for Child Welfare in Wartime. She was involved with the Victorian International Refugee Emergency Council and the Australian Open Door Council. She became national secretary of the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO) and later President of WIZO Australia. She was involved in a broadly based women’s protest movement against the atomic bomb in 1946 and at the same time become the foundation President of the League of Women Voters of Victoria and initiated the Women’s Parliament in 1946 as a way of women gaining the necessary experience in public speaking and debate so as to gain elected office. Active across a range of organizations over four decades, Julia Rapke made a great contribution to advancement of the status of women in Australia and beyond. In 1957 Julia Rapke was appointed O.B.E., particularly for ‘raising the status of women’ and for improving ‘the care and treatment of underprivileged children and delinquent youth’.

My niece Nikki died from cancer in March 1998, aged 23. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer 10 months earlier, requiring surgery, radical hysterectomy and radiotherapy. She then developed secondaries. She was too young and vibrant to die like this, and is still sadly missed.

My dear cousin Dr Martha Renth-Swift worked in the Queen Victoria Hospital for many years as an honorary doctor. She was a brilliant doctor and a very wise and erudite lady. My husband died at 44 years in 1967 of heart problems. I was left with no income with two small girls. My cousin became like a Mother to me. I am forever grateful for her endless kindness to me.

Irene was founding president of the Coburg Community Health Centre until her death in 1988. She also obtained her arts degree at Melbourne Uni. Wrote two books “Doctor I have a rump” and “I’m Glad I Didn’t Give Up”. The proceeds of this went to patient care Peter McCallum Hospital. She was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1987.

Sarah’s life work has shown a commitment to fighting injustice and removing the barriers and stigma that reduce the quality of life of people with illness.
